Top 10 Dental Emergencies

At Children’s Dentistry of Reno, we understand that accidents happen, especially when it comes to kids. That's why we're here to provide you with valuable information about the top ten dental emergencies in children and what you, as a parent, should know to handle them effectively. Remember, our experienced team is always available for your child's dental emergencies.

Emergencies happen. And, we’re here to help when they do. In no particular order, we’ve narrowed down the most common dental emergencies we’ve seen in our office.

1. Knocked-Out Tooth (Avulsed Tooth): Don’t panic. If this happens to your little one, retrieve the tooth. Hold the tooth by the crown (not the root) and rinse it gently if dirty. Try to reinsert it into the socket if possible. If not, place it in milk or a tooth preservation solution and contact us immediately. Time is critical in saving a knocked-out tooth, so act swiftly.

2. Broken or Chipped Tooth: Yikes! Unfortunately, this is more common than you might think. Rinse your child's mouth with warm water, and if you can find the broken piece, save it. Contact our office for evaluation and repair. Prompt attention can prevent further damage and potential infection.

3. Toothache: This can be painful for a kiddo. Toothaches can signal underlying issues that require professional care. Rinse the mouth gently with warm water, floss to remove any trapped debris, and call us for an appointment.

4. Object Lodged Between Teeth: An object stuck between teeth can cause pain or damage to the gums and teeth. Whatever you do, don't use sharp objects in your child’s mouth. Try to gently remove the object with dental floss. If unsuccessful, contact our office.

5. Soft Tissue Injuries (Bitten Lip or Tongue): If this occurs, clean the area gently with warm water, apply a cold compress to reduce swelling, and monitor for any signs of infection. While usually not severe, soft tissue injuries may require medical attention if bleeding doesn't stop.

6. Lost or Loose Crown: Keep the crown if possible, and schedule an appointment with us for reattachment or replacement. Leaving a tooth uncapped can lead to further damage.

7. Orthodontic Emergencies (Broken Brackets or Wires): Use orthodontic wax to cover sharp edges. If you cannot get in same-day with your child’s orthodontist, give us a call. Broken braces components can cause discomfort and interfere with orthodontic treatment.

8. Abscess or Swelling: Contact us immediately if your child experiences facial swelling or signs of an abscess. Dental abscesses can be painful and may lead to more severe health issues if left untreated.

9. Lost Baby Tooth Due to Trauma: Losing a baby tooth prematurely can affect the alignment of permanent teeth. Keep the area clean and monitor for infection. Contact us for guidance.

10. Canker Sores: Canker sores are usually not a dental emergency but can cause discomfort. Rinse the mouth with a mild saltwater solution and apply over-the-counter ointments if needed.
